Grove GMK5200-1 Crane Overview and Specifications

The Grove GMK5200‑1 is an all-terrain crane with a maximum lift capacity of 240 tons. The maximum boom length is 210 feet and the maximum jib length is 59 feet.

Powering the GMK5200‑1 is a Mercedes Benz OM471LA diesel engine. This six cylinder, water cooled, turbocharges, 532 horsepower beast is Tier IV compliant, and able to complete any job thrown at it. The transmission, also made by Mercedes, is a G280 model with VIAB. The transmission has 16 forward gears and 2 backward, allowing for ultimate control and mobility throughout a jobsite.

The VIAB system is a combined turbo coupling and retarder all in one system. This allows for less space to be used, thus allowing for more features to be implemented. The VIAB system enables wear-free starting and breaking, reduces fuel consumption, and avoids overheating. All of these features save money and keep the GMK5200‑1 on the jobsite working instead of in the shop.

The GMK5200‑1 saves time on the jobsite by being self-sufficient. The crane can be moved on the jobsite with all 70 tons of its counterweight installed. This saves the time it would take to install and remove counterweights on another crane. The GMK5200‑1 also comes standard with a self-rigging auxiliary hoist. This hoist negates the need for an assist crane on the jobsite to help with rigging. The GMK5200‑1 is even more useful on the jobsite as it can use many of the same parts as other Grove all-terrains, limiting the need to search for an exact part and allowing for a broader scope of parts to be used to maintain the vehicle.
