Link-Belt 548 Crane Overview and Specifications

The Link-Belt 548 is a behemoth of a crawler crane with a max lift capacity of 500 metric tons (550 U.S. ton). It features 3 different types of booms, a four piece heavy duty boom design that reaches up to 96m (315 ft.), a six piece long range boom design that extends up to (354.3 ft.), and a luffing boom that is 72m (236.2 ft.). The 548 crane also has a jib, a basic luffing jib design that reaches out 72m (236.2 ft.). Optional inserts and extensions are available as well.

The 548 model crane is equipped with a powerhouse Isuzu 6WGI Tier III, 6 cylinder engine that produces 532 and has 211 fuel tank. The carbody is composed of all welded precision machined surfaces. The hydraulic pump system is designed to provide hydraulically powered functions allowing positive, precise control with independent or simultaneous operation of all crane functions. Three drums (W1, W2, W3) come with the model 548 and an optional (W4) luffing jib hoist drum. W1 & W2 are load hoist drums, W3 is a boom hoist drum. Each drum contains an axial piston and a variable speed hydraulic motor with individual automatic winch motor brake.

The counterweight/upper consists of a 17 piece design for a total combined counterweight of 396,900 (180 030kg). The crane’s swing system is pilot controlled, and bi-directional. Axial piston motors and planetary gear reduction units provide positive control under all load conditions.

The cab is a fully enclosed modular steel compartment is independently mounted and insulated to protect against vibration and noise. There are drum rotation indicators for front and rear hoist drums along with an engine instrumentation panel. The rated capacity limiter system is a boom hoist load cell system.
