The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has mandated that all diesel engines, including off-road and on-road cranes as well as all other heavy-duty diesel equipment, reduce diesel emissions or face fines of up to $10,000 a day. ALL CALIFORNIA CRANE OWNERS ARE AFFECTED. Compliance also extends to all cranes brought into the state to work. Compliance is required by March 2010 for the largest fleets. Smaller fleets have until 2015 to qualify.

To meet the CARB regulations, every crane must be certified that it is reducing particulate matter by 85% or more. Some cranes may already qualify. Other cranes may require a diesel retrofit emission control device to meet the CARB requirements. Retrofitting involves modifying the existing diesel exhaust system by removing the muffler, and replacing it with a special device that traps or burns off PM (particulate matter) and other highly poisonous material that has historically been expelled into the air.

The exact method used to clean the diesel exhaust varies by device. Diesel retrofitting is a cost-effective solution to complying with the new CARB regulations, and can help extend the life of your crane.

What Can I Do?

Bigge is the authorized dealer in California for CLEAIRE Advanced Emission Controls for on and off-road cranes. Cleaire manufactures and distributes diesel emission control systems for both on and off road cranes, and is licensed by both CARB and the EPA. Cleaire specializes in Level 3 filters, which restricts particulate matter by 85% or more, as required by the state.
