Bigge celebrates the 41 year anniversary of erecting the Oakland Arena's one-of-a kind, 427' suspended cable roof.
In 1966, the arena's roof was considered an "all time great" and an "engineering landmark". Due to the Bay Area's high seismic activity, the supporting concrete structure was built to sustain the entire roof mass if shaken by an earthquake.
Bigge's engineering team centered a tower crane, configured with two 30' rotating booms and, much like a spider web, strung the nearly one hundred 3,000 lb. cables between the tension rings. Once the cables were secure, Bigge set and joined 90' long pre-cast concrete ribs to stabilize the roof.
41 years later, after enduring several earthquakes and an extensive remodel, the innovative roof and Bigge's contribution remain intact.
