Bigge To the Rescue Repairing SF Bay Area Freeway
On April 26, 2007, disaster struck a major San Francisco Bay Area freeway, just 10 miles north of Bigge Crane and Rigging headquarters, as a tanker truck carrying 8,600 gallons of gasoline overturned and burst into flames.
The 50-foot-high ramp connecting westbound Interstate 80 to southbound Interstate 880 was totally destroyed. The intense flames, which exceeded 2,750 degrees melted the steel beams that supported the overpass structure causing a 165 foot section of the freeway to collapse onto the roadway below.
Once all the demolished asphalt was removed, Bigge moved in with a 90-ton Link-Belt HTC8690 hydraulic truck crane to lift girders and start shoring the elevated roadway below.
Once again, Bigge has provided relief with immediate service in response to this Northern California freeway disaster. Bigge performed similar work after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake when the cypress structure on Interstate 880 collapsed.
