Bigge Power Constructors assisted with the decommissioning of the Connecticut Yankee Nuclear Power Plant in East Hampton, CT. Bigge was required to engineer solutions for transporting the Reactor Pressure Vessel, an over 1,000 ton module, from plant site to barge, and then on to its ultimate destination.
The main challenges with this project, in addition to handling the vesel, were arranging transportation from the facility to the barge, barge transport of over 1,000 miles to the port at Aiken, South Carolina, and from there to disposal facility in Barnwell, South Carolina. Because of the extreme weight and size of the module, extensive permits were required for all phases of the project, but Bigge managed to complete the job under the deadline.
