Bigge Expands Wind Power Fleet

Bigge Crane & Rigging invests in latest lifting technology to support the wind power sector

Bigge Crane and Rigging of San Leandro, California is doubling the size of its crane fleet dedicated to erecting wind turbines and investing in the very latest innovations in lifting technology designed to accelerate the construction of wind turbine parks.

Terex RT1120 Wind Power

Bigge already has a fleet of more than 350 cranes operating out of nine locations nationwide, making it one of the Top 10 crane owners in the country* .

Bigge has already been deploying its family of Liebherr crawler cranes to wind power projects around the country, including the 330-ton class LR 1300. Bigge has the largest LR series crawler crane fleet in the country.

For customers more familiar with the Manitowoc brand, Bigge offers the 300-ton class Model 2250.

Larger crawlers up to 600-ton capacity are now being added to the Wind Power Fleet, including the Terex-Demag CC 2200, (375 ton), CC 2400-1 (440 ton) and CC2500-1 (550 ton). These cranes are capable of erecting turbines on the big 105-meter masts and moving quickly from turbine to turbine, whether fully rigged or stripped down.

The new flagship of the fleet, however, is the 600-ton Kobelco SL 6000, which is ahead of the field when it comes to rapid deployment between wind turbines. The SL 6000, designed for lifting 2.5MW turbines on 105-meter masts, has an innovative design with rope drums in the base section so they do not need to be removed when stripping the crane down for transportation.

For ancillary lifting work, Bigge has some of the largest rubber-tired rough terrain cranes ever produced. These include the Terex RT 1120 (120 ton capacity) and Link-Belt RTC 8090 (90 ton) models. Joining the fleet in the next few months is the Link-Belt RTC 80130, rated at 130 ton capacity and with 162 feet of telescopic main boom and 55 feet of jib.

Jesse Sullivan, project manager for Bigge’s Wind Power Division, said: "We have put together a fleet of cranes that we believe offer our customers the very best solutions, in terms of performance, efficiency and reliability. As well as the best machines, we also have the best people. We have a nationwide network of factory-trained service engineers as well as teams of project managers, estimators and safety professionals."

Bigge also supports wind power contractors by offering a full engineering design service, complete with Auto CAD drawings, for planning lifting and transportation operations.

Bigge will be exhibiting at Windpower 2008, June 1-4, in Houston, Texas. Please visit us at Booth 2467.
