(SANTA CLARA, CA) Bigge has recently completed hoisting at the first of several solar panel installations at Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Northern California. Atop the Santa Clara Kaiser Permanente Hospital parking structure, Bigge craned up all of the structural steel for a ‘canopy’ of photovoltaic solar panels. Once erected, the panels will supply up to 15 percent of the hospital’s power, in addition to providing shade and shelter for cars parked on the top floor of the parking garage.
The site will generate 15Mw of solar power, equivalent to the electricity to power 1,900 homes. To erect the panels, Bigge use a long boom truck crane, a Link-Belt HC-268 with a maximum capacity of 250 tons, 290 feet of boom and a 70 foot jib.
"As a company committed to renewable energy and with our own green initiatives," said Steven Leaverton, "we are excited about being a part of Kaiser’s plan to reduce its energy use and at the same time save more than $10 million dollars per year with their energy conservation strategies."
