Scope:

Bigge Crane and Rigging, as contractor to KFM, performed the following heavy transportation activities for the new San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge:

  • Engineering a custom transportation solution for moving two (2), 200 foot long pre-fabricated steel “tub” section of the bridge to barges
  • Moving the three (3) sub-assemblies of each section at the fabricators
  • Furnished, assembled, and operated the self propelled Scheuerle hydraulic platform trailers
  • Lifted and weighed the 1,800 ton bridge section, and loaded it on a barge in Oregon
  • After the barge was positioned under the Bay Bridge, rotating the bridge section 90 degrees on the barge for the lifting operation
  • Bigge also furnished and operated the strand jacking lift system, including a pair of 1,000 ton capacity girders on a 125 foot span on the east, a pair of 60 foot long 1, 000 ton capacity girders on the east, and Hydrospex strand jacks which accomplished a 200 foot vertical lift in approximately 8 hours and side-shifted the section precisely into position

Job Challenges:

Bigge successfully dealt with the following challenges on this project.

  • Engineering a unique solution to the transportation system for a 1,800 ton load
  • Moved the 200 foot load on to a floating barge in Oregon
  • Rotated the 200 foot, 1,800 ton section 90 degrees on a floating barge in San Francisco Bay for the lift
