Scope:
Bigge Power Constructors, as subcontractor to Bechtel Power and New England Power, performed the following nuclear power plant steam system decommissioning work involving heavy lift and heavy transportation.
- Engineered solutions for Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) transportation
- Transported the packaged RPV, approximately 1,000 tons, from plant site to barge
- Arranged for barge transportation by river, Atlantic Ocean, and river to Barnwell, SC
- Offloaded barge at Barnwell and transported RPV 26 miles over road by platform trailer
Job Challenges:
Bigge Constructors will successfully deal with the following challenges on this project.
- Handling a packaged RPV of 1,000 tons
- Engineering unique solution to transportation issues
- Transportation of RPV on land by platform trailer
- River and ocean barge transportation of the RPV
- Permitting issues including dealing with U.S.C.G. on barge mooring methods
- Off loading RPV at improvised barge slip at Barnwell
