Scope:
Bigge Power Constructors, as subcontractor to Duke, performed the following nuclear steam generator (SG) work involving heavy lift and heavy transportation.
- Engineered solutions to the SG lift and transportation
- Installed specialized Bigge SG handling equipment in the Catawba Containment
- Lifted and removed four existing 425-ton SG’s from Containment
- Moved into Containment, lifted and set the four replacement 425-ton SG’s
- Transported the original SG’s by platform trailer to onsite entombment
Job Challenges:
Bigge Constructors will successfully deal with the following challenges on this project.
- Handling of four SG’s, a total of 1,700 tons
- Engineering unique solutions including an up-ending cart, a 1,000 ton gantry and platform for the elevated equipment hatch, and a through-hatch runway system
- Utilizing Bigge’s Temporary Lifting Device atop the Polar Crane for lifting and setting SG’s
- Utilizing Bigge’s Allied crane for handling equipment in containment
