Scope:
Bigge Power Constructors, as subcontractor to Duke, performed the following nuclear steam generator (SG) work involving heavy lift and heavy transportation.
- Engineered solutions to the SG lifts and transport
- Installed specialized Bigge SG handling equipment in the McGuire Containments
- Lifted and removed four existing 425-ton Unit #1 SG’s from Containment
- Lifted and removed four existing 425-ton Unit #2 SG’s from Containment
- Moved into Containment, lifted and set the four SG’s in each Unit #1 and #2
- Transported original SG’s to onsite entombment by platform trailer
Job Challenges:
Bigge Power Constructors successfully dealt with the following challenges on this project.
- Handling of eight original and eight replacement SG’s, a total of 6,800 tons
- Engineering unique solutions including a down-ending cart and a runway through the ground level equipment hatch
- Utilized a Temporary Lifting Device on top of the Containment Polar Crane
- Transportation of SG’s by platform trailer
