Scope:
Bigge Power Constructors, as subcontractor to SMUD, performed the following nuclear steam system decommissioning work involving heavy lift and heavy transportation.
- Engineered solutions to lifts of the Steam Generators (SG’s)
- Installed specialized Bigge SG lifting equipment in Containment
- Lift and holding the two 560-ton SG’s for segmenting into halves
- Removal of SG halves from Containment
- Transportation of SG halves by platform trailer to on-site storage
Job Challenges:
Bigge Constructors successfully dealt with the following challenges on this project.
- Handling of two SG’s, a total of 1,120 tons
- Engineering unique solution for SG removal utilizing specialized equipment for lifting and rigging
- Managed all site field forces and general engineering personnel through four year contract to complete the decommissioning process
- Previously removed the generator rotor and transported it by land and water to the Surry Nuclear Power Plant in Virginia
