Scope:
Bigge Power Constructors, as subcontractor to Raytheon, performed the following nuclear steam generator (SG) work involving heavy lift and heavy transportation.
- Engineered solutions to the SG lifts and transportation
- Installed specialized Bigge SG lifting equipment in Salem Containment
- Lifted and removed four existing 375-ton Salem SG’s from Containment
- Received barge delivered Seabrook SG’s and transported to Salem Containment
- Lifted SG’s to elevated equipment hatch, moved into Containment, upended, lifted, and set four 375-ton replacement SG’s
Job Challenges:
Bigge Power Constructors successfully dealt with the following challenges on this project.
- Simultaneous operations at two nuclear power plant facilities under tight schedules
- Handling eight SG’s, a total of 3,000 tons
- Engineering unique solutions including an up-ending cart, gantry and platform for elevated equipment hatch, and a runway system
- Utilizing Temporary Lifting Device for lifting and setting SG’s
- Utilizing Bigge’s Allied crane for handling equipment in Containment
- Transportation of SG’s by platform trailer and barge
- Barge transportation, requiring two barge / tug units, handled by Bigge
