Scope:
Bigge Power Constructors, as subcontractor to Raytheon, performed the following nuclear steam generator (SG) work involving heavy lift and heavy transportation.
- Engineering solutions to the SG lifts and transport
- Installed specialized Bigge SG handling equipment in the Seabrook Containment
- Lifted and removed four 375-ton Seabrook SG’s from Containment
- Transported Seabrook SG’s by barge and platform trailer to Salem, NJ
- Moved replacement SG’s into Salem Containment, lifted and set
Job Challenges:
Bigge Power Constructors successfully dealt with the following challenges on this project.
- Simultaneous operations at two nuclear power plant facilities under tight schedules
- Handling eights SG’s, a total of 3,000 tons
- Engineering unique solutions including a down-ending cart and a runway through the ground level equipment hatch
- Utilizing plant cranes for lifting SG’s (Temporary Lifting Device was used)
- Transportation of SG’s by platform trailer and barge
- Highway bridges of insufficient capacity requiring reinforcement and jumping
- Barge transportation, requiring two barge / tug units, handled by Bigge
