Scope:
Bigge as subcontractor to Guy F. Atkinson and Westinghouse performed the following nuclear power plant steam system new plant construction work involving heavy lift and heavy transportation. Bigge handled the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV), Steam Generators (SG) and Pressurizer..
- Engineered unique solutions to the lifts and transportation
- Barged the NSSS components to the Diablo Canyon site
- Furnish and erected a gantry lifting system at the barge slip
- Trans-loaded the RPV from barge to a unique Bigge vehicle for land travel
- Transported the RPV some 9 miles on the Diablo Canyon site
- Moved the RPVs into Containment, upended and set
- Moved the SGs into Containment, upended and set (four (4) each per Unit)
Job Challenges:
Bigge successfully dealt with the following challenges on this project.
- Handling of two RPVs, the eight SGs and 2 Pressurizers over 3,000 tons
- Difficult barge trans-loading site
- Engineered and fabricated a unique solution for transporting the RPVsh
- Furnishing specialized equipment for lifting and rigging
