Scope:
Bigge as subcontractor to Bechtel performed the following nuclear power plant steam system new plant construction work involving heavy lift and heavy transportation. Bigge handled the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) and Steam Generators (SG) offloading from barge, transporting and erecting in Containment.
- Engineered unique solutions to the lifts and transportation
- Lifted the RPV (404 tons) and SGs (506 tons each) from well-deck barge at Site’s slip
- Trans-loaded the RPV and SG to crawler transporters for land travel up 6% grades
- Moved RPV and SGs into Containment, upended and set
Job Challenges:
Bigge Constructors successfully dealt with the following challenges on this project.
- Offloading the RPV and two SGs from well deck barge using a self powered crawler A frame
- Using crawler transports for the weights and grades
- Upending with crawler transporters and gin poles erected in Containment. Gin poles had to straddle polar crane with load block inside polar crane
- Working in winter weather at shore of Lake Michigan
