The Link-Belt 228 HSL Crawler Crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 130 US tons with a main boom extension of up to 235 feet and a fixed jib length of up to 75 feet. This crawler crane brings superior capabilities such as complete self-assembly, hydraulic operated controls, and free-fall wet brake winches.

The Link-Belt 228 HSL is powered by a Cummins QSB6.7 Tier 4 engine with 270 horsepower at 2000 . The 228 HSL comes with operator selectable idle engine shut off for improved fuel economy. Inside the cab of the 228 HSL is a cellular-based data logging and monitoring system that allows crane and engine monitoring, diagnostic and fault codes, monitor routine maintenance intervals, and a variable hand throttle that allows for infinite main pump control.

The 228 HSL also comes with different packages including as the Vision Package which includes rear view, winch view, and left side swing camera system with color monitor, or the Versatile Winch Package which includes the ability to power off and power on with an automatic brake and matching hoist drums with 26mm rope and 2 operating modes.
