Bigge Furnishes Mega-Load Solutions

When the three sections comprising a hydrocracker reactor bound for a refinery expansion project in Great Falls, Montana became stranded for months at the Port of permits, the owner turned to Bigge for an innovative, fast track, multi-modal transportation solution.

Bigge’s solution was to barge Sections 1 and 2, the heaviest at 660,000 pounds, back down the Snake and Columbia rivers for transloading to rail cars at Boardman, Oregon. A special train then conveyed these two Sections to southwestern Montana where Bigge could load to our Beam & Dolly style highway transporter for the 275 mile haul to Great Falls. Crossing the Rocky Mountains with this megaload, carried by 20 dollies (160 wheels), required 6 prime mover tractors, and a full complement of commercial and highway patrol escorts to ensure public safety around the 20 foot wide, 400 foot long transporter assembly.

Meanwhile, Section 3, too wide for the available rail clearances, was suspended between a pair of Bigge’s 8 axle, dual lane, hydraulic trailers for its 600 mile journey north through Idaho, east into Montana, looping south of wilderness areas, to safely arrive at Great Falls. Permits allowed highway transports only at night and only Sunday through Thursdays.

Bigge’s scope included route surveys, permitting through the Washington, Idaho and Montana departments of transportation, bridge engineering and the furnishing of jumper bridges in Idaho, coordination with law enforcement, and the supply of engineering, management, supervision and crews to operate Bigge’s custom designed DL and Beam & Dolly highway transporters as well as securing the tug, barge and special train services. Bigge also handled site and route improvements, utility issues and on site transportation.

With two Sections safely delivered, and the third targeted for early October, the owner looks forward to having the fully welded-out 900 ton, 135 foot reactor ready for setting early next year.

Bigge is Growing and Needs You!

Bigge Crane and Rigging is rapidly expanding and in need of qualified crane operators. Bigge is looking to hire numerous operators from across the U.S. at every one of its thirteen offices nationwide. Hundreds if not thousands of hours are available.

To be considered, operators must be NCCCO certified and have a minimum of one year experience as a crane operator. A Class A license and completion of high school or secondary education, trade school or college, is preferred. Candidates also must live within 50 miles of the location at which they would like to be considered for a position.

We’ve been operating at full capacity for the last few months, and have even more jobs coming up in the Fall and we need more qualified operators to help keep Bigge’s star shining now and in the future.

Bigge LEEDs by example in Salt Lake City

Bigge recently assembled a Comedil CTT721-40 to construct a massive 24-story office tower adjacent to the new Utah Performing Arts Center, a 2,500 seat Broadway Style Theater expected to be completed in early 2016. At present the crane is 237' from base to tip , with 197' of jib. Over the course of the next 20 months it will be jumped three times, approximately 75' at a time, to wind up at 454' tall to finish the building.

The tower is a 24-story office building and is part of the City Creek project, which Bigge has been involved with for years. City Creek was recently voted America’s best shopping center. This building, designed to be LEED Gold Certified when completed, will offer 440,000 sq. feet of office space, a typical floor size of 21,000 square feet, column-free design, and floor-to-ceiling glass.

Bigge Builds Bridges

To build a bridge and rail line across a Novato creek recently, Bigge Crane and Rigging used one of its Liebherr LR1300 crawler cranes. Once built, the LR1300 was needed on the other side of the bridge. Rather than completely disassemble the crane and move it on trailers, Bigge’s operators decided to use the newly built rail bridge to transport the boom, saving nearly a full day of work.

To do so, Bigge lowered the 300’ boom section on to the rail platform, disconnected it from the LR1300 chassis, and used a heavy haul trailer to pull it down the bridge, where it was reconnected on the other side. This kind of once-in-a-lifetime job was made possible only by the ingenuity of Bigge’s operators and engineers.

The rail bridge is one small part of SMART, the Sonoma Marin Rail Transport project, meant to connect the far reaches of the North Bay to Larkspur on the edge of the North Peninsula. In its current phase, the project will span 43 miles from Santa Rosa to San Rafael, and be opened for riders by mid-2016.

Bigge adds Ultra High Capacity Xtremes to the Fleet

Bigge’s ever growing fleet has added the newest telehandler from Xtreme Manufacturing, the 70,000 pound capacity XR7038. Unveiled at ConExpo in March, the XR7038 is one of the largest telehandlers on the market, and is now available for rent to Bigge’s customers. The Xtremes are immensely popular among Bigge’s clients and adds another level of flexibility in an already versatile equipment fleet.

The XR7038 telehandler has a rated lift capacity of 70,000 pounds, a maximum lift height of 38 feet 2 inches, and an operating weight of 115,000 pounds. Using a 300-horsepower, Tier 4-Final Cummins engine, the XR7038 is available in three cab configurations—open, closed with heat, closed with heat/air conditioning—and features an electronic engine monitor, heavy-duty boom rollers, and a rearview camera system. The XR7038’s standard fork-positioning carriage has forks that each weigh in excess of 2,000 pounds, and tires are foam-filled and 6.5 feet in diameter.

The XR7038 features a fork positioning carriage as standard and also comes equipped with a boom lift point, driver suspension seat, rear view camera, electronic engine monitor, and long-life boom rollers for smooth operation.
