The Terex-American HC 230 is a crawler crane with a maximum lift capacity of 230 tons. The maximum boom length is 290 feet and the maximum jib length is 40 feet.
The HC 230 is powered by the Cummins 8.3. This diesel engine is rated at 300 horsepower and has a fuel capacity of 180 gallons so less time is spent fueling up and more time is spent performing lifts. The high speed hoist system is made up of 2 main and auxiliary load hoisting drums. The drums give the HC 230 the power to lift, and each comes with power up/down and an external contracting brake and an internal expanding band clutch.
The hydraulic system is made up of 2 variable displacement piston pumps and 3 gear pumps. The variable displacement pumps supply power to the travel and hoisting functions. The gear pumps give power to the swing, hydraulic cylinders, and pilot pressure. The counterweight system is composed of 8 pieces connected by pins. The pins make for easy assembly and disassembly and the 8-piece counterweight system allows for the ability to only take the counterweight needed for each job, limiting waste on shipping.
The car body is made of fabricated steel in a deep box form. Square axles are included to allow for the crawler side frames. The top is precision machined and support anti friction swing circle and multiple pass hydraulic swivel join.
