Elevating America: San Mateo Wastewater Treatment Plant Transformation
Supporting sustainability goals and rehabilitating an aging wastewater treatment plant were the main drivers behind a project that required a pair of Bigge’s tower cranes.
Located near the shores of San Francisco Bay and visible from Highway 101 and the San Mateo Bridge, a Potain MD 689 M40 Hammerhead, and a Comedil CTT 721B-40 Flat Top spent 44 months hoisting materials and equipment for a customer specializing in this type of facility.
Both cranes are rated at a maximum capacity of 44 tons, making them ideal for hoisting various loads. The cranes moved materials ranging from bundles of rebar for reinforced concrete to cage systems used for concrete columns and curtain walls. They also moved equipment, like boom lifts, and other building components, like fabricated stairwells.
The strategy for placing the two towers was developed collaboratively between the client and Bigge’s sales and engineering teams. While both cranes were outfitted with 262 feet of jib, the Potain was configured to 158 feet in height, and the Comedil was built 48 feet lower to compensate for their overlapping swing radius.
The upgrades resulting from this project include new treatment facilities to comply with national permit limits. The renovations will also increase the system’s capacity to manage wastewater during storms and help eliminate sanitary sewer overflows in the San Francisco Bay.
