Bigge Crane and Rigging Co. moved a 460-ton electric generator from Three Mile Island to its new home in North Carolina.
The heavy lift and transportation division of Bigge handled this move. The trailer went down Route 441 S on Thursday, May 6th and Friday, May 7th. Then, on Saturday May 8th, it crossed over the Route 30 bridge; moved down Route 462 W and Highway 24 South that Sunday. Bigge moved the load no faster than 12 miles per hour in order to ensure safety. From there, it went by barge to Virginia and then by rail to North Carolina. There were road closures along the route, making it easy for people to come out and see the massive generator on the move.
The heavy transportation project followed Bigge's replacement of a nuclear reactor vessel head at Three Mile Island, Unit 1, in 2003.
